Causal Argument Essay - 1357 Words
Causal Argument: Will Lowering the Drinking Age Solve the Problem of Binge Drinking among College Students? Research has supported the observation that young people in America consume alcohol regularly; this prevalence of use increases rapidly during adolescence, as well as a few years afterward (Wagenaar and Wolfson 37). This has come to be a problem among college students. It has been shown through extensive quantitative and qualitative research that those under twenty-one years of age are able to obtain alcohol, which allows them to binge drink. Binge drinking holds many problems for college students: alcohol poisoning, DUIs, traffic accidents, and even fatalities. In 1984, the federal drinking age was raised to twenty-one. Thisâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Louisiana has the lowest rate of arrests for liquor law violations with a rate of 12 arrests per 100,000 in the population; South Dakota has the highest rate with 561 per 100,000 (Wagenaar and Wolfson 39). Despite these numbers of arrests through appropriate law enforcement, underage individuals are still able to access alcohol in many areas. In a recent study, underage males successfully purchased packaged beer in 97 percent of attempts in Washington D.C., 80 percent in Westchester County, New York, and 44 percent in Albany/Schenectady Counties in New York. A similar study found that underage youth were refused alcohol sales in only one-third of 100 establishments tested in eight sights across the United States (Wagenaar and Wolfson 38). It is believe that this perceived leniency in the enforcement creates an environment that enables binge drinking among those that are underage. Those in favor of lowering the drinking age also claim that social norms play a major role in perception of alcohol, which is believe to end in the justification of binge drinking. Key social constraints such as community acceptance and perceived influence of the political power of the alcohol industry that work to divert attention from commercial sources of alcohol for those that are underage. Other social aspects of the cultural and policy environment in communities affect the issue of alcohol use in youth. However, for the purpose of this paper I would like to reflect on one of someone else s moral dilemmas. I first knew Denman in the Army while we were training in Germany for a deployment to Iraq in 2005. One day Denman had received the tragic news that his aunt had suddenly passed away. He had a very close relationship with his aunt who played a significant role in raising him. He knew that moment that he needed to be with his family in mourning and for the funeral. Denman pleaded to his chain of command for him to go home, but they ultimately told him no because she was not his immediate family (per Army rules and regulations). He then had two possible choices he could make, both of which held negative consequences. On one hand, he could go home on his own to be there with his family for their sake and also his. With this he would miss valuable deployment training, face a variety of possible punishments for going against direct orders, and him being considered Absent Without Leave (AWOL). On the other hand, he could obey his orders and not go home. The negative consequences of this would include him not being focused on the training because of his grief, feelings of regret and shame for not being with his family, and possible feelings of resentment and abandonment towards him from his family. Walt Whitman 2 Essay Research Paper Mysticism free essay sample
Walt Whitman 2 Essay, Research Paper Mysticism, Democracy, Individuality A ; Personality The 1881 publication of the Leaves of Grass contained more than 24 verse forms, which were moderately filled with 10 or more diversified types of subjects. Walt Whitman the writer and compiler of this exceeding work changed the position of poesy composing through his use of idea and look in the publication of the Leaves of Grass. Ralph Waldo Emerson, a collogue and supporter of Walt one time spoke this of him Whitman, that Sir, is a unusual instance, a instance unknown to any of us, unless we should falter upon him at church one twenty-four hours ( Chase 142 ) . A prevalent topic in all of Whitman s poesy is his usage of the Divine Soul ( God ) , which tends to explain that Whitman was a really strong truster in his faith. Whitman usage of subjects discusses his ain individualism and personality ; he wanted to explicate the democracy of America, and its accomplishments, while giving poetical idea to the great enigmas that plagued world of his coevals. The human ego was comprised of physical and religious extension which both contained a ego and psyche as was characterized by Whitman. The ego that Whitman spoke of was a adult male s ain single individuality, which has a distinguishable quality and being, different from the egos of other work forces, but could be utilized to place other work forces. The psyche is another type of individuality of world, which finds its niche in a human, and begins to magnify its personality. This ego and psyche that embodies every adult male on this heavenly organic structure is a part of the Godhead psyche besides known as God. Whitman s usage of these two elements led him to a closer way towards God, as he one time said A adult male, who finds himself, is I the manner of coming closer in contact with God ( Whitman 104 ) . Some critics confuse Whitman s usage of ego and psyche to be egotism through his usage of the pronoun I, but he uses I as a universal, a portion of the beatific universe ( God ) , and hence he is non an narcissistic adult male. Whitman had a deep religion in the democracy of America because this political signifier of authorities respected the person. He believed that the United States was best expressed through the common citizen, non the executive subdivision or the legislative assembly. Another belief of Whitman is that in democracy, the common individual had a undying fond regard to freedom. This attitude of Whitman could be traced back to the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, where he thought that all immoralities dwelled in the oppressive societal establishments, non in the naif human head. The map of Whitman s literature was to urge people to interrupt away from the feudal yesteryear and advancement to the democratic hereafter, for Whitman held no respect for worlds with rubrics of aristocracy, he merely wrote poesy for the common adult male. Whitman regarded everything with great importance for illustration, a individual foliage of grass, was as of import to him as the celestial gesture of the stars. Whitman s love of America was due to his birds-eye position of the scenery and its diverse democratically inclined peop lupus erythematosus America, this great land is full of democracy and republicanism ( Cowley 143 ) . This great adult male was the author of the ego and the publishing house of democracy, because he believed that merely in a free society could persons achieve self-hood. His rise to civic virtuousness improved his true religious ego to go a Democrat. This thought of democracy was that all work forces were created equal and have equal rights as stated in the fundamental law of the Untied States, but this democracy was tainted with religious democracy that the human being had immerse possibilities and a measureless wealth for religious power. Mysticism is an experience that has a religious significance, which is non evident to the senses or to the mind. Therefore mysticism is the penetration into the existent nature of adult male, God, and the existence, which can be attained through 1s intuition. To the mysterious there is a topographic point where the integrity of God, adult male, and nature exists, and clip and infinite travel are unreal, since both can be overcome by adult male through religious conquering with a religious presence on his side, a adult male can get the better of any conflict ( Pearce 142 ) . Whitman lip service is shown when he states that evil merely resides in the oppressive societal establishments, but he subsequently reveals that immorality has been eradicated, through God s omnipresent property may all evil vanish signifier the walks of Earth, because God has arrived ( Cowley 78 ) . A human communicates with their psyche through mystical experiences, which Whitman gives amply responses to this in his publication the Leaves of Grass particularly in Song of Myself. In the Leaves of Grass, he expresses his mystical experiences of his organic structure being entered upon by a supernatural force. Whitman s poesy is his artistic look of assorted addresss of his mystical experience. Some Critics argue that Walt Whitman uses no peculiar accepted signifier of poesy. And that in Style Whitman believes that poesy should hold been spoken non written. Whitman was the maestro of ebullient phrases and images, which made his rhythms really celebrated and noteworthy those phrases and vivid images made me feel like I was truly there ( Chase 153 ) . In his usage of imagination he shows his inventive power, the deepness of perceptual experiences and his capacity to capture world outright. Whitman used symbolism to construe the existence and its and its extremely mystical inquiries. Finally, the usage of individualism and personality explained Whitman s usage of subjects ; this was achieved through the account of the democracy in American, and the great enigmas of world were solved through poetical idea. Whitman s accomplishments as a poet were genuinely monumental. He exercised a deep influence on his immediate replacements in American letters and even on modern poesy. As a symbolist his influence was felt in Europe, where he was considered one of the greatest American poets of all time. Walt Whitman became modern through his use of his prophetic property and became universe renowned for his great poesy. Some of the areas are hidden which can be easily known to us and not for others such as having the sharp ability for the emotions based talk that is in their tone. In the blind area quadrant, condition the communication skills, some of these which of not aware of it and the others also not aware of this such as having the capacity of decode the nonv erbal prompt. In this having the score of 9 out of 18 it makes the leading style. As, some of the people which are amiable have examined themselves such as dependable, agreeable, supportive and respectful by the only individuals can make the concentration in their present( Shultz, 2016). The Amiable people such as me and others may involve personal, friendly, orderly and relaxed by this if an individual may get frustrated or may be confused or not communicate easily in these formal setting such as presentations and interviews. A call came for an interview even while facing the interview no eye-contact is there also giving the wrong answer to the question asked because of the nervousness and then also clear the interview. Analysis Of Gangs Essays (1679 words) - Criminology, Crime
Analysis of Gangs Gangs are a violent reality that people have to deal with in today's cities. What has made these groups come about? Why do kids feel that being in a gang is both an acceptable and prestigious way to live? The long-range answer to these questions can only be speculated upon, but in the short term the answers are much easier to find. On the surface, gangs are a direct result of human beings' personal wants and peer pressure. To determine how to effectively end gang violence we must find the way that these morals are given to the individual. Unfortunately, these can only be hypothesized. However, by looking at the way humans are influenced in society, I believe there is good evidence to point the blame at several institutions. These include the forces of the media, theater, drugs, the government, and our economic system. By looking at the forces of the media, theater, drugs, and the capitalist economic system we can apply Akers' social learning theory and the Marxist theory as the cause of Gangs. Akers' social learning theory addresses the forces of the media, theater, and drugs. Akers' social learning theory states that criminal and delinquent behavior are acquired, repeated, and changed by the same process as conforming behavior. It also addresses four major concepts of differential association, definitions, differential reinforcement, and imitation. It goes on to say that this process will more likely produce behavior that violates social and legal norms than conforming behavior when persons differentially associate with those who expose them to deviant patterns, when the deviant pattern is differently reinforced over conforming models. Marxist's theory has capitalism the as the cause of crime. Marxist theory states that ownership of the means of production by the capitalist ruling class produces a society that is inherently criminogenic. The theory believes that the crimes committed are either, ?crimes of accommodation or crimes of resistance to the capitalist system. On the surface, peer pressure and greed cause gangs. Many teens in gangs will pressure peers into becoming part of a gang by making it all sound glamorous. Money is also a crucial factor. A kid (a 6-10 year old, who is not yet a member) is shown that s/he could make $200 to $400 for small part time gang jobs. Although these are important factors they are not strong enough to make kids do things that are strongly against their morals. One of the ways that kids morals are bent so that gang violence becomes more acceptable is the influence of television and movies. This is an example of the social learning theory. The average child spends more time at a TV than she/he spends in a classroom. Since nobody can completely turn off their minds, kids must be learning something while watching the TV. Very few hours of television watched by children are educational, so other ideas are being absorbed during this period of time. Many shows on television today are extremely violent and are often shown this from a gang's perspective. A normal adult can see that this is showing how foully that gangs are living. However, to a child this portrays a violent gang existence as acceptable. 'The Ends Justifies the Means' mentality is also taught through many shows where the "goody guy" captures the "bad guy" through violence and is then being commended. A young child sees this a perfectly acceptable because he knows that the "bad guy" was wrong but has no idea of what acceptable apprehension techniques are. Gore in television also takes a big part in influencing young minds. Children see gory scenes and are fascinated by these things that they have not seen before. Older viewers see gore and are not concerned with the blood but rather with the pain the victim must feel. A younger mind doesn't make this connection. Thus a gore fascination is formed, and has been seen in several of my peers. Unfortunately kids raised with this sort of television end up growing up with a stronger propensity to becoming a violent gang member or 'violent-acceptant' person. "Gangs bring the delinquent norms of society into intimate contact with the individual."1, (Marshall B Clinard, 1963). So, as you can see if TV
